Last year, the Los Angeles Police Department recovered 8,661 firearms, of which 1,921 were ghost guns. Some 90 percent of those guns were produced by the Nevada-based company Polymer80, which is now in the crosshairs of a civil lawsuit, NBC News details. Polymer80 is one of the largest manufacturers of "do-it-yourself" firearm kits, where people can purchase completed pistols, pistol-making kits, slides, parts, and accessories. In December 2020, agents with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives searched the company's headquarters, alleging in their search warrant affidavit that Polymer80 was selling firearms and kits without performing mandatory background checks, leaving out serial numbers, or maintaining the required records. "Polymer80 is a law-abiding company," says Polymer80's president, Loran L. Kelley Jr. "It's a legitimate company catering to a sector of the market that has nothing to do with a criminal element."
