Even as politicians began sparring over the killing of Punjabi rapper and Congress leader Sidhu Moosewala on Sunday evening, people from the entertainment industry also reacted to the death with shock and disbelief.
Sidhu was shot dead by gangsters close to his ancestral village in Punjab's Mansa on Sunday.
Hindi films star Ajay Devgn shared the picture of the 29-year-old singer-turned-actor-politician on Twitter to mourn his death.
"Stunned by the shocking death of Sidhu Moosewala. May Waheguru give his loved ones strength in their hour of grief. RIP departed soul Still trying to wrap my head around this one," he wrote.
Actor Swara Bhasker also expressed her grief over the killing. "This is so tragic. Moosewala was amongst the first artists to lend support to the Farmers Protest Deeply unfortunate. Condolences to the bereaved families," she tweeted.
Comedian and TV star Kapil Sharma, who is from Amritsar, called the incident "very shocking" and "very sad". "Satnam Shri Waheguru very shocking n very sad, a great artiste n a wonderful human being, may God give his family strength sidhu moosewala," he tweeted.
Former 'Bigg Boss' contestant and actor Shehnaaz Gill wrote: "Kise da jawaan dhee ya putt es duniya toh chala jaave, es toh vadda dukh koi nahi ho sakda duniya te. Waheguruji mehar kareyo sidhu moosewala." Her tweet roughly translates to, "Nothing is more painful in the world than someone losing their young child. God, please show your mercy."
Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit also took to Twitter to make a political statement: "Well-known Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala Shot Dead in Mansa district. Security was withdrawn yesterday. Heartfelt condolences to the aggrieved family and fans. It's an intelligence failure & the Arvind Kejriwal Govt. should own the responsibility."
Music composer and singer Vishal Dadlani called it a "sad day". VJ and actor Rannvijay Singha expressed his shock in a tweet, where he wrote, "Shocking news about sidhu moosewala, can't believe it."
Moosewala was on the wheel in a Mahindra Thar SUV when the assailants, believed to be 10-12, fired more than 20 rounds at point-blank range at the singer and his two friends, who got grievous injuries. Moosewala got seven-eight bullets.
It is learnt that the AK-47 assault rifle was used in the crime as its shells were recovered from the crime scene.
Moosewala was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead. The civil surgeon at Mansa hospital said Moosewala was brought dead, while the two others were referred to another hospital for treatment.
Born on June 17, 1993, Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, professionally known as Sidhu Moosewala, hailed from the village Moosa in Punjab's Mansa district.
