The team behind one of Barrow's most popular attractions is celebrating after it achieved its highest ever score from the national tourism organisation VisitEngland.

The Dock Museum, in Barrow, shares the region's shipbuilding heritage and welcomes thousands of visitors through its doors every year.

It has now been awarded an impressive score of 91 percent during its most recent accreditation inspection from VisitEngland.

John Irving, manager at The Dock Museum, said: "We are all genuinely over the moon to have achieved such a high score from VisitEngland.

"The team here are all passionate about the museum and ensuring we provide the very best experience for our visitors, so to see this recognised is wonderful.

"We've got some exciting things planned throughout 2022 that we're looking forward to and hope both new and returning visitors will also really enjoy."

The Dock Museum has also been put forward for a Hidden Gem Award which will be judged later this year.

Councillor Tony Callister, Barrow Borough Council's lead member for Arts, Culture and Leisure, said: "To achieve a score like this from VisitEngland is superb.

"High praise must go to the team behind the scenes who work tirelessly to make sure the exhibitions and events at The Dock Museum are of the highest quality with something for everyone to enjoy.

"I would encourage everyone to visit to gain a fascinating insight into Barrow's heritage as shipbuilders to the world as well as a whole host of other things.

"The Dock Museum is a fantastic attraction and an asset to our borough of which I am especially proud."

The VisitEngland inspection report described The Dock Museum as 'an excellent local asset' with 'a fascinating collection and a vibrant and interesting temporary exhibition programme'.

It added that museum staff were friendly and helpful to visitors and their enthusiasm for the museum and local area shone through.
