Cruises Are Getting Popular Again but Is It Safe To Go On One?

Unfortunately, it seems as though Cvoid-19 is here to stay. It has been almost two and a half years since the start of the pandemic, and it seems as though life is returning to normal. Countries are lifting mask mandates and testing requirements. Everyone is itching to get out and see the world again. Cruise bookings are currently either at or above where they were in 2019, and all of the major cruise lines have their full fleets operating again. If you are ready to take your dream vacation but are struggling to save, consider using some best vacation loans online so you can book everything now and pay it off over time.

Covid-19 Program for Cruise Ships

There will always be the risk of getting Covid-19 on a cruise. Because people from all over the world are in such tight quarters, the virus can easily spread. However, some precautions can be taken to avoid getting the virus. Most major cruise lines require vaccinations to take your trip. Of the 94 cruise ships that have opted into the CDC's COVID-19 Program for Cruise Ships, 92 are considered highly vaccinated. This means that 90 per cent or more of travellers are fully vaccinated. The other two ships are considered to have the "vaccination standard of excellence," which means that 90 per cent or more of travellers are fully vaccinated and boosted, if eligible.

It is not all good news, though. Even with high vaccination rates, 93 of the 94 ships are at colour stats orange, which means the reported cases of Covid-19 on board have met the threshold for investigation. Only one ship is below this threshold. The orange level means that 0.3 per cent or more of passengers and crew on the ship have Covid-19. Many people that are vaccinated are fine assuming this risk. Die-hard cruise lovers just want to get back on the water and know that catching the virus is a potential consequence.

How to cruise safely

It is important to always follow recommended health and safety protocols. It might not be as simple as that, depending on where you get off your boat, if you test positive for Covid-19, you may be required to quarantine until you test negative. Even if it is not required, test before you get on your cruise ship and when you get home. This will help make sure you do not spread the virus to anyone else unknowingly. Although it is still common to get the virus while vaccinated, it will likely be less severe. Wear a mask whenever you are in a crowded area for added protection. If you are especially vulnerable or immunocompromised, discuss options with your doctor before taking your trip. Wash your hands frequently and use hand sanitiser whenever it is available. By taking a few extra precautions, you can minimise your risk of contracting the virus and enjoy your trip.

Bottomline

Many people love cruises. Some people take them every year or multiple times a year and have missed being out on the open water for the past few years. It is possible to cruise safely as restrictions get lifted, but you need to take proper precautions to avoid the virus.

Understand that you are assuming risk by going on a cruise ship and figuring out if that risk is
worth it to you. There is no situation where you are completely risk-free of contracting Covid-19, whether you are cruising, flying, or road tripping. Get tested, stay up to date on vaccines, and enjoy the summer.
