I was in a coffee shop. It was a Wednesday morning.
A group of older fellows sat across from me. A mother and son entered. The boy was about ten years old.
The two recognized one of the gentlemen and walked over to his table. After some pleasantries were exchanged the older fellow had a question for the boy.
"Shouldn't you be in school?"
The mother answered, "It's his birthday. He gets the day off."
Are you serious? Is that a thing now?
I had so many questions I wanted to ask, but I kept silent.
- What message is this giving your son?
- Does he not enjoy school?
- When he's a teenager will he still get the day off? If so, do you actually think he'll want to spend it with you?
- Will your note to his teacher actually say why he wasn't in school?
- Do you consider this good parenting?
Until those questions are answered I suppose I should refrain from passing any judgement.
In three years his birthday will be on a Saturday. In that case, I wonder if he is entitled to either the Friday or Monday off.
Apparently, if you are in grade 4 and your birthday falls on a school day, that day includes picking out your favourite donut.
