Chapter Nineteen - Part Three
Elwyn
I slipped into the palace through one of the servants' entrances. Swift and silent, I padded up to my modest chambers that were attached to the more sumptuous ones that belonged to the queen.
Everything was as I'd left it: my few belongings neatly arranged in the plain crate next to the bed that was made with military precision. When I'd been assigned this room, I'd been relieved to see how simple it was. The last head guard must have shared my tastes when it came to decoration.
I retrieved one of the official royal guard uniforms from the cupboard and shook it out. While I wasn't someone who bothered at all about fashionable clothing, I loved these garments. They represented the fact that I had earned the place I was always meant to have. They were also just to my liking when it came to style.
Among the Kiranvari nobility, yellows and golds dominated clothing. And the ordinary palace guards were decked out in stunning scarlet. Royal bodyguards weren't there for decoration though, they didn't indulge in peacocking fashions. The rich deep blue was a soothing balm to all that obvious finery. It represented a serious person doing a meaningful job.
Suitably clothed, it wouldn't have done to present myself in my rough travelling gear, I went in search of Lord Cyrano. He wasn't in his office or personal chambers. I frowned, unsure of where to look for him next. When I looked up, I saw that someone was approaching me.
It was a man I didn't recognised. However, I thought that I could see a resemblance to the royal family in him. He had the same straight nose as Emperor Marq. A confident man with a long stride, I was astonished to realise that I was attracted to him.
He nodded to me. "Is he in his office?"
"Oh, no. I don't know where he is. I need to find him, actually." I was babbling. Such inappropriate behaviour made me furious with myself. I had to get it together.
