We booked a table at Cosmos for Sunday lunch a week or so ago when we hear they had a two piece band playing Blues. (Fabrice Joussot).
Larry and Hazel were joining us and we thought they would like the venue, even though Larry hates coming our of Vera Playa into Mojacar, he hates loud music, has very definite views on food and is a general an all round Grouch.
But we thought this would appeal.
There is a definite French influence on the menu with a leaning toward Veggie/Organic dishes.
We have eaten here before and I have to say the house wine, both Red and White are the best in Mojacar and yet still only €3 a glass.
When we arrived we were shown a table on the patio overlooking the Beach and the sea, which would have been lovely a week ago, but in the last few days the temperature has dropped and today was a cool 23ยบ with a wind off the sea, so it felt quite cold.
We settled on a table a bit further back and it warmed up quite a bit when they closed the screens on the side of the decking. But I was still cold all the way through the meal and even now, writing the blog 6 hours later , I am still wearing my coat.
When Larry and Hazel arrived I was pleased to see they had brought a coat each but Hazel's was a bit thin and she seemed to shiver all the time we were eating. I know I did.
The menu was very eclectic and it takes a bit of working out as its written in chalk on a board and the writing gets a bit squashed in places. Sadly I missed one of the boards completely (they keep moving them around so diners can see them from their table) and I didn't even think to take a picture of the Deserts Board.
There was plenty of 'Fish' and Plenty of 'Seafood' available as well as Veggies and Salad.
Eventually we made our decisions and put in our orders.
I chose the Falafel which was really good, soft inside with a crispy coating whilst Larry chose the Grilled Padron Peppers.(Completely tasteless unless they are coated in something).
We shared both dishes and I was so carried away (or so bloody cold) I forgot to take any pictures but I'm sure you can visualise a Falafel ball and a green pepper?
As our main courses were delivered the band started and I was worried they would be a bit too loud and spoil the lunch. Luckily they were just this side of the border and although we had to shout to be heard they were a good band and the blues influenced music didn't drown us out completely.
Jaki and Larry both went for the 'Fried Cod' (€20) nicely presented and well cooked it had a tangy sauce with it. There were a few Potatoes on the plate with this dish but if you were really hungry I would suggest ordering a Portion of Fries.
Hazel knew straight away that she was going to order the Risotto de Shittake (€ 15) which she enjoyed but again, this wasn't a big portion and half the plate was filled with Lettuce which added nothing to the dish and she left untouched.
I was struggling as most of the dishes had Carbs with them, in abundance. So I had to find some thing that would fill me up (I was starving by the time the food came). I went for the Veggie Burger which came in a bun (Carbs) with the most delicious basket of Chips (Carbs) which i generously put in the middle of the table for everyone to share.
My Burger, which reminded me of a Frog, was really good, It would have been difficult to know this was a Veggie burger (€14) and not real meat, but it was so small. The Bun was packed full with ingredients, Avocado, lettuce & Tomato with the little burger hidden away in the middle.
I basically had a 'Salad Bun'.
Luckily I had asked for some of the spicy sauce that was served up on the Cod so when i spread that on the salad it made it quite tasty. I was how ever forced to eat the bun or ( for the second time in a week) my meal would have consisted of mainly Lettuce.
No wonder I'm losing weight.
That said, It was tasty, very healthy and very low Carb/Calorie so I wasn't unhappy.
However, I did decide to treat myself and have a pudding, though the choice was hard.
In the end I went for their special Autumn Pudding which was fantastic.
We decided to have two between us and share.
When we had finished eating we left the table and went inside for Coffee, mainly to thaw out.
Then Larry's ankle tag went off and he was in danger of being 'outside his comfort zone' longer than permitted, so we hastily paid up and said our farewells.
Hazel is flying back to Dublin in the morning so we wont see her till next year. Larry is bowling on Tuesday then he is driving up to Bilbao with his friend John before taking the ferry back to Ireland on Monday. So this was a last Hurrah till next year.
To summarise.
An Interesting and surprisingly different menu that makes a welcome change from the usual fare on offer, but portions are small and it isn't a cheap restaurant.
The environment is comfortable and attractive though it is subject to the weather, being so close to the Sea. There is limited indoor seating though there are tables outside at the front (road side) though you are subject to people smoking.
YUK.
Food is nicely cooked and presented, service is very friendly and accurate (they come around and number each table with chalk so there is no confusion) but portions are a bit Sparse.
On a sunny afternoon there can't be many better venues.
MY only complaint?
How did the waiter make such a mess of our Team Photo?
