An electrifying true story of a turbulent year for Ferrari founder, Enzo Ferrari and his wife Laura.

Set during the summer of 1957. Ex-race-car driver, Enzo Ferrari (Adam Driver), is in crisis. Bankruptcy stalks the company he and his wife, Laura (Penélope Cruz), built from nothing ten years earlier.

Their tempestuous marriage struggles with the mourning for one son and the acknowledgement of another.

He decides to counter his losses by rolling the dice on one race - 1,000 miles across Italy, the iconic Mille Miglia.

Ferrari chooses a very interesting and kind of unconventional part of the true story to adapt.

Instead of going for a conventional underdog story it's a much more intense, more interesting film that shows how masculinity and ambition desensitise someone to the tragedy that surrounds them.

Telling the story of Enzo Ferrari and the world of Italian car racing both from a personal and professional angle.

The glamour of the racing scene and their fearless drivers juxtaposed against the mortal risk they take as they try to excel in their field.

Originally Christian Bale was set to play the lead role which would have seen a reunion with director Michael Mann after Public Enemies (2009), Hugh Jackman was another name linked with the role before, until Adam Driver took over the role in January 2022.

Michael Mann's (The Last of the Mohicans/Heat) direction gets just as close to the racing as it does to Adam Driver's stern face.

The racing sequences themselves are electric, by getting as close as possible, the speed and danger are definitely felt.

It all culminates in a horrifying crash in which the lack of sound makes it even more impactful.

My Rating: 9/10
