Havent seen my old mate Kevin since before Christmas so we decided to catch up over breakfast.
My car was in for an MOT so we agreed Kev would follow me to Backfields Farm and then we would go in the Cafe there, but as usual things got confusing.
As it turned out, the mechanic collected my car from home as he wanted to listen to it starting up from cold so I didn't have to deliver it.
I did have to take the Transit up to Georgia's house as they were hoping to sell it to We Buy Any Car dot com who offered a reasonable price when we made the initial enquiry, but as is often the case, when we actually took the van to them, they wanted to knock thousands of pounds off and in the end their offer was way too low. Such a wate of time.
So Kevin followed me to Georgias and then we drove the short distance to Mrs G's Cafe in Hatters Lane , Chipping Sodbury, one of my all time favourite Cafes.
Parking was a bit difficult so we thought it would be very busy but when we got there a big guy was stood in the doorway and wouldn't let us in. He pointed to the sign in the window which showed the opening times, and Wednesday wasn't on there.
It seems they closed down due to Covid and have struggled to recruit staff since, so now they only open Thursday - Sunday. I would double check that as the info on line is a bit contradictory.
So we were looking at plan B (why is it always plan B)?
We headed for Chipping Sodbury rugby Club where there is a Cafe run by one of the pubs in the high street but I cant remember which.
There is a large car park so we had no trouble parking and when we got inside we were the only customers so we had no problem securing a table either. In fact it was positively hollow inside. The room is huge, its cold, bleak and completely unwelcoming.
A few tables were placed down the sides of a huge hall that wouldn't be out of place as a Cub Hut. A small electric heater was trying valiantly to take the chill off our table but it was completely inadequate.
In the kitchen a lady was hovering in the large well equipped Kitchen as we perused the Menu displayed over the counter.
A 'Full Breakfast" was advertised at £7.20 which is reasonably priced but it didn't give any cues as to what was included so we had no idea what we were ordering.
Bacon Rolls were £3 each and i suspect these are popular with the Dog walkers who tend to sit outside whilst their Dogs bark and howl at the end of 'Walkies'. I suspect walkers and Dog walkers in particular are the main stay of this Cafe's custom.
All drinks appeared to be £2.40 for a large and £1.90 for a regular.
We went for two Breakfasts and two teas and made our way to the nearest table to wait.
On the plus side everything seemed to be cooked from scratch as there didn't appear to be any cookers turned on when we placed our orders.
On the negative side, it took an age before any food or drinks arrived and when it did, it was very disappointing.
One reasonable sausage, two slices of very nice, well cooked tasty Back Bacon, Baked Beans and a Hash brown were a positive start but then it went down hill, fast.
A portion of tinned tomato added too much juice to the bean juice and created a sludge. The single Egg was over cooked, hard and burnt but it was its appearance that really let it down, it looked grubby and tasted a bit strange.
There was no attempt to upgrade this offering with some decent toast What came was cheap thin sliced white bread with a nob of butter balanced on top. you know how I hate the toast being on the same pate as the food. Even worse, pacing the butter on top of the toast makes it melt.
Well, there was no danger of that. The whole breakfast was cooling rapidly and the toast was already stone cold.
The mugs of Tea were cooling fast so we had to gulp it down quickly but they came at the same time as our food so they were secondary.
The whole thing was about as bad as Ive had in a while.
It made no effort to lift itself above mundane. The quality of the ingredients may well have been good to start with but the way they were massacred in the cooking meant nothing could shine.
Every complaint I've ever had about a breakfast was included in this one, from the venue (Cold and Soulless) to the dirty cutlery. Even the serviette they placed on the table had a stain on it.
This is definitely one to avoid unless you are really desperate.
With this as local competition I am surprised Mrs G's isnt making a killing.
