NDPP sweeps Nagaland Municipal Polls – Check the Winners

The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) gave an excellent performance by sweeping the urban local bodies in the State, polling for which was conducted on June 26 and result declared on Saturday.

Counting of votes for the polls to 24 urban local bodies ~ 3 Municipalities and 21 Town Councils ~ spread over 10 districts commenced at 8 a.m. in 16 centres. Nearly 82% of the over 2.23 lakh electors exercised their franchise in the civic polls on June 26.

Of the 21 Town Councils, NDPP has the majority in most, except Wokha, Phek and Tuli while it did not field candidates in Bhandari and Niuland Town Councils.

The Naga Peoples' Front (NPF) which has only 2 MLAs in the State Assembly from Bhandari in Wokha and Phek in Phek district held majority seats in both the Town Councils. In Bhandari TC, NPF won 6 out of 9 wards while BJP, JDU and Independent got 1 each. In Phek Town Council, under Phek district, NPF won at least 7 out of the 9 seats. In Niuland TC, BJP won 6 out of the 9 seats while 3 went to Independents.

In the capital municipality, NDPP which had already won 5 seats as unopposed out of the 19 wards for Kohima Municipal Council, added 8 more after the final declaration of result to have the majority seats.

In Mokokchung municipality, NDPP had won 6 uncontested seats out of 18 and increased it to 15. In Dimapur MC, NDPP won 13 out of the 23 seats while BJP got six and two each were won by NPP and Independents. People of Tseminyu Town Council gave a fractured mandate as in the 9 wards NDPP each seat went to NDPP and JDU with 1 going to Independent candidate. Tuli also had a fractured mandate with Congress and BJP winning 3 seats each out of 9 wards, while NDPP got 2 and 1 went to Independent. In the 9 wards of Tening, NDPP got 4, NCP 3 and 2 Independent while in Mangkolemba TC NDPP got 4, Congress 1 and 4 are Independents. In Atoizu TC, where none of the parties got absolute majority in the 9e wards, NCP won 4, BJP 2 and Independent 2 and NDPP 1. Interestingly in Chozuba TC, people favoured the Independent candidates as they voted for 5 of them in the 9 seats while NDPP won 4.
