Nine Masaza teams have secured their spots in the highly anticipated Buganda Royal Regatta final, scheduled for August in Busabala.
The teams—Mawokota, Kyaggwe, Buddu, Buvuma, Bugerere, Gomba, Kyadondo, Bulemeezi, and Busiro—were confirmed following the conclusion of the semifinals in Nakiwogo over the weekend.
This event marked the second circuit of the regatta season, following the successful opening leg in Bunjako.
The competition was fierce on Saturday, with host team Busiro emerging victorious in the 5000m race, narrowly edging out strong contenders Buddu and Mawokota.
In the 10,000m race, Mawokota claimed the top spot, closely followed by Buddu and Buvuma.
Buwekula's Allen Nagirinya received special recognition for her exceptional performance in a traditionally male-dominated sport.
Eng. Ben Misagga, Chairman of the Buganda Royal Regatta, lauded his committee for orchestrating a successful event and emphasized the importance of empowering women through sports.
Buganda Sports Minister Ssalongo Robert Sserwanga highlighted the regatta's significance in the Kingdom's strategy of promoting development through sports.
"Events like these are crucial in bringing development back to our people through the power of sport," Sserwanga stated.
Hon. Patrick Luwaga Mugumbule, Speaker of the Buganda Kingdom Parliament, praised Misagga for sustaining the sport, noting its integral role in Buganda's rich sports culture, which includes disciplines such as football and netball.
"Sports are essential for our community, not only for fitness but for overall health. I urge the people of Busiro to embrace these activities wholeheartedly," Mugumbule urged.
The event also underscored Buganda's commitment to fighting HIV, with a thematic focus on "Men against HIV/AIDS to save the Girl Child." This initiative aims to raise awareness and encourage proactive measures in the fight against the epidemic.
The stage is now set for an exhilarating final in Busabala, promising thrilling races and a celebration of Buganda's sporting spirit.
