Isaac Ogwang's 45th minute strike was all Police FC needed to defeat Kataka FC 1-0 and be crowned the 2023/24 betPawa Big League champions at Mbale stadium.
Lugazi (53 points) finished second on the 15-team table, three points below the Cops, despite winning their last game 2-0 away against Jinja North on Sunday.
In Mbale, Police got just the result they wanted. Ogwang scored his 14th goal on the final day of the season, and it was enough to help the Cops claim the 2nd division title for their first time ever.
Police should've scored within the opening ten minutes, as Denis Kalanzi, who had received a through ball from Ivan Eyamu smartly set up Ogwang who took his shot, but it went just inches wide.
It was Police's top scorer still, who broke the deadlock, striking the ball with his weaker left foot to find the back of the net, putting the visitors ahead right before the halftime break.
In the 53rd minute, Daniel Otto and Raymond Onyai replaced Samuel Kayongo and Ivan Eyamu respectively, as the Cops needed fresh legs on the pitch to instensify their search for a second goal.
Reagan Male and Duncan Sseninde were brought on to replace Denis Kalanzi and Steven Kabuye in the 69th minute, but Ogwang's 45th minute strike, and Kasibante's steadiness in goal stood out after 90 minutes of football at Mbale stadium
After 27 games, Police won upto 16 times - the most in the league. The Cops also registered eight draws and lost just thrice the entire season, racking up 56 points.
In the individual awards, Dennis Kalanzi was voted the Most Valuable Player of the season. He contributed seven goals and eleven assists to Police's trophy winning season.
Ogwang was joint top scorer with 14 goals, alongside Booma's Dickson Nuwamanya.
Lugazi's Emuran Fahad won the Golden Glove after keeping 12 clean-sheets as Lugazi finished second, and debutants Young Elephants took home the Fairplay award.
Meanwhile, Kyetume (24), Young Elephants (19), Jinja North (18) and Ndejje University (10) have all been demoted to the third division - thell will play in their respective regional leagues respectively.
